Central Executive Committee
1. In the Soviet Union, the bodies responsible for the policy of Soviets between meetings of the Soviet congress; in charge of the day-to-day operations of their local Soviets. The two most well-known executive committee's were the All-Russian Central Executive Commitee (1917-1922) and the All-Soviet Central Executive Committee (1923 - 1991); both the executive committee for the national Congress of Soviets. The central executive committee was initially freely elected by the members of the Soviet, but soon membership silently came under the control of the Secretariat of the Communist Party (Stalin) and, by the 1930s, was fully controlled by the Politburo.
Central Committee
The body responsible for party policy between meetings of the party congress; in charge of the day-to-day operations of the party.
Ceylon Mercantile Union (CMU)
Medium-sized union of government employees, white collar workers and miscellaneous other office employees. Led by Bala Tampoe of the LSSP(R), it was one of the few important unions standing outside the federations led by the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and pro-Moscow and pro-Peking Stalinists parties.
