An amnesty law that will reportedly result in the release of 185 political prisoners was approved by the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic on August 29.
The law had previously been approved in the Dominican Senate. It was submitted to the parliament by newly elected President Antonio Guzmán, who took office August 16. [1]
1. The election of Antonio Guzmán Fernández in 1978 put an end to twelve years of state repression under the anti-communist, right wing regime of Joaquín Balaguer. Guzmán Fernández, from the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), served as president from 1978 until his death in 1982.
