Canadian workers are the lucky winners of yet another counterfeit communist, party, the Workers Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist). It follows in the footsteps of the Communist Party of Canada, Canadian Party of Labour and Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist). The WCP(M-L) is the brainchild of the now defunct Canadian Communist League (Marxist-Leninist).
The WCP(M-L) upholds basically the same opportunist line that the League advanced formerly. The League’s draft programme published this spring, was adopted with just a few minor amendments. It is worth noting that not a single public meeting was ever organized to discuss that programme. Like father, like son.
The WCP(M-L) is not going to waste any time debating its political programme with the masses! Evidently the delegates to the founding Congress were inspired by a similar spirit of “full democracy” since they managed the not inconsiderable feat of adopting the programme, constitution and political report by the outgoing central committee in a single weekend! But then, as a League member told The Forge, Marxism-Leninism “is not difficult to understand” (June 1, 1979).
It comes as no surprise therefore to learn that the new “democratic” party takes up where the League left off in firmly promoting Canada’s independence against U.S. imperialism and Soviet social imperialism. The WCP(M-L) stands foursquare against the American car monopolies and for a Canadian car monopoly. It is unflinchingly against the American oil monopolies and for Petrocan. The WCP stands on guard against Soviet satellites and for a strong Canadian army. It is against U.S. investments in Canada but it is for investments by a developing Canadian imperialism in the countries of the “Second World”, the “Third World” and even in “socialist China”.
The WCP(M-L) also affirmed its unaltered support for the three worlds theory, which provides a “guide for the world proletariat”. The three worlds theory, for those who are not familiar with it, is the theory that enables Deng Xiaoping to refer to U.S. imperialism as China’s “strategic ally” against the U.S.S.R. This wonderfully flexible theory provided a ready rationale for the League in supporting reactionaries like Khomeini in Iran and even President Mobutu in Zaire. It provided the logic for League backing of a boosted NATO arms budget to fight against the Soviet threat. The WCP(M-L)’s cup of proletarian internationalism flowed over in its resolution on “the unity of the international Marxist-Leninist movement”, which is a veritable grab-bag of timeworn phrases about common links and hosannahs in praise of Hua’s and Deng’s revisionist China.
Hua and Deng have not as yet found it prudent to return the favour. The name of the Communist Party of China is nowhere to be found in the list of a dozen or so “three-worldist” organizations around the world which sent messages of congratulations. Well, after all, Hua and Deng have lots of other things on their minds these days – such as doing business directly with Power Corporation, Massey-Ferguson and the other Canadian imperialists.
