Taya Zinkin
OUP (The Modern World Series), 6s 6d.
Taya Zinkin’s booklet is more useful a guide to the prejudices and judgments of those who help formulate British policy towards India than an introduction to India itself. More than half the text is devoted to potty history: ‘The British also refrained from interfering with the customs of the people.’ Most of the rest is fat with generalisations: ‘What Nehruism loses in speed, it gains in soundness’ (this in 1964, a few months before his death!). There are lively descriptions of the country.
