The British Press and Jews Under Nazi Rule
Andrew Sharf
OUP, 30s.
One J. Podro, ‘the well-known Anglo-Jewish literary figure’, spent a great deal of time and energy collecting British press-cuttings about Jews, spanning the years 1919-1951. These substantial archives were presented to the Jewish Historical Archives by their collector, and Dr Sharf now provides an analysis of those relating to the Jews in Germany, 1933-1945. The result is a history neither of ‘the Jewish question’ nor the British Press, but a piece of stamp-collecting done competently on material intrinsically fit only for the waste-paper basket. It must be hard to achieve triviality in the horrors of the concentration camps; Dr Sharf, struggling valiantly through this act of devotion to the late J. Podro, comes close to succeeding.
