An Enquiry Into Enoughness
Daniel Lang
Secker & Warburg, 25s

Lang is a reporter on the New Yorker and this, his fourth book dealing, it is said, with the social impact of science and technology, consists of modified versions of six of his articles. The title piece is concerned with the question, when will there be enough nuclear weapons? He reveals among other things the astonishing paradox that American weapons are being designed with an eye to restraining the arms race. Other pieces cover a disarmament conference, a Pugwash conference, an underground test gone wrong, President Kennedy’s scientific adviser, and an Aldermaston march. The whole thing is beautifully written and rather difficult to put down. Indeed the unwary reader may well imagine that Lang is engaged in a serious study of serious problems. It seems that everybody concerned – McNamara, the Pentagon, the Russians, the Aldermaston marchers and, of course, Lang himself – are serious and sober men of good will. Naturally there are still many difficulties but with so much good will floating around who can doubt ... Highly recommended for those who enjoy their euphoria. Look at Life again soon.
