Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Chile
Michel Raptis
Allison and Busby, £3.50/£1.50.
RAPTIS is better known as M. Pablo, under which name he was for years a leading member of the ‘Fourth International’ and in whose political suicide he played a prominent role. His politics have not improved since his expulsion and this book shows it.
In his discussion of Chile, Raptis clearly believes that a revolution was taking place without the self-liberation of the working class, without a revolutionary party, and without the destruction of the bourgeois state machine. Events overtook him and the second part of the book registers his confused surprise at the September coup. Out of his confusion emerge a few interesting documents published by the Cordones, but the bulk of the book is an attempt to persuade Popular Unity that they should allow workers more of a say in running the ‘revolution’.
This book is blind to the real developments inside Chile during Allende’s office and has little of value for anyone wishing to understand that period. It is a disgrace that political charlatans of this type should still gain a hearing. The publishers were clearly conned. Don’t join them.
