Socialist Worker is the newspaper of the International Socialist Organization (U.S.) and one of the U.S. socialist movement’s oldest newspapers still in production. It began publication in April 1977. In 2001, it began publishing on the Internet at http://SocialistWorker.org, and since 2008 has been a daily website of news and commentary.
Socialist Worker’s editors through the years have been Cal Winslow; Ahmed Shawki, author of Black Liberation and Socialism (Haymarket Books, 2005; and Alan Maass, author of The Case for Socialism (Haymarket Books, 2010). Among its regular contributors are Sharon Smith, author of Subterranean Fire: A History of Working-Class Radicalism in the United States (Haymarket Books, 2006); Paul D’Amato, author of The Meaning of Marxism (Haymarket Books, 2006); Lance Selfa, author of The Democrats: A Critial History (Haymarket Books, 2008); Lee Sustar, author of the forthcoming Striking Back in Chicago: How Teachers Took on City Hall and Pushed Back (Haymarket Books); and Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, author of the forthcoming Rats, Riots and Revolution: Black Housing in the 1960s (Haymarket Books).
The ISO sees itself in the tradition of “Socialism from Below,” as represented by Hal Draper’s “The Two Souls of Socialism.” The ISO’s “Where We Stand” is located at SocialistWorker.org: http://SocialistWorker.org/where-we-stand. The second set of of issues, 1982 through 1985 is fragmentary as well. We have only 1 issue as of yet for 1982 and only a few for 1985 as well. This situation of course be remedied when they become available.
Please note: in the masthead of this page above it has the publication cities as "Cleveland & Chicago". In 1983, the headquarters of the ISO and thus Socialist Worker moved to Chicago and has been there ever since.
